Resizing Images are generally easy, but it can be quite a chore if you have multiple images to resize (greater than 100?) MS paint can only resize one at a time and lose a bit of quality, so for those who want to resize images quickly and without using simple or complicated macros, Irfanview is a software that can help solve your woes with it’s batch processing function.
I have created a step-by-step tutorial on how to do a batch resize below:
Step 1: Go to the folder Where all the pictures you want resized are stored, select any picture from the batch and open it with irfanview.
note: Right-click on the file and Select “Open with”, then choose irfanview.
Step 2: When irfanview opens, Select File->Thumbnails
Step 3: The thumbnail view will now open; You can see all the pictures you places on the folder of you image here. Select all the images you want to resize, right click on one of the select ‘Start Batch Dialogue with selected files’
Step 4: The Batch conversion window will now appear; There are a lot of options to do here but we’re only going to do a batch resize, so check the ‘Use advanced options’ checkbox and click on Advanced.
*note: remember to specify your output folder.
Step 5: Now, Even more options will appear on the window but we’re only going for the resize, so check the ‘resize’ checkbox. Now, there are two ways to resize, first is to specify the pixels/dimentions for the photos or you can scale it to a smaller size using the percentage of the original. It depends on your preference, specifying pixels is good if you have to follow a strict size specification. Scaling on the other hand, is just estimating how big you’d want it (half the size, a quarter… ect.)
*note: there are also other options in the lower part which you can play with to get the result you want.
Step 6: Now that you’re done choosing, click on ‘OK’ then ‘Start Batch’ To start processing. A resounding report will appear on the status of resizing your pictures and you’re done! check your output folder for your newly resized pics. :p
I hope this tutorial helps, if you want to post this on other sites just remember to give credit and inform me. =)

Your directions are super for a novice like me. I was able to follow everything except “remember to specify your output folder”. I didn’t know where to type in the folder, or what the folder was supposed to be called.
1. File name: ??
2. Common Graphics Files <<<< does that stay the same?
I would really appreciate any extra advice you could give me.
I did the batch resizing 3 times and could never find any of the pictures resized.

Hi Jeannie,
Glad you were able to find the tutorial helpful. =)
For your question, in step 4, the output folder is where all the resized pictures would be dumped into, some common folders are:
1. if there aren’t so many pictures and you want them to appear in your desktop you can put
“C:\Documents and Settings\(insert your user ID here)\Desktop”
2. “C:\” this is usually the main hard drive, to access it, go to My computer, then C:
(note, the hard drive name may vary in other computers so it might not be C:, just look into ‘my computer’ to see what drive letter your computer is using.)
(note 2: if you have a lot of pictures to resize this might result in a lot of clutter, try the 3rd option(below) if this is the case)
3. A more organized approach to number 2 is to create a new folder in C: where you would want to store all of the resized pictures. go to my computer->C: then right click and select New->Folder, name it to whatever you want and you can now use that as your output folder
it will be named “C:\(name you chose)”
*in order to specify the output directory place the folder names on the “Output directory for result files” box (can be seen in step 4 picture) by the way, you might see a folder name already placed there, and you’d probably be able to find all of the pictures you resized earlier there.
I hope this would be able to solve your problem. =) if you have more problems then feel free to write them down and I’ll try to help as much as I can =)

Hi, I have a feature on one of my machines that runs Irfanview 3.91, where I have a resizing option when I right-click on my mouse in any directory on Windows. I cannot seem to find to enable this on any of my other machines, and have replicated every setting I can find under properties/settings. Your help would be much appreciated, as this is so much easier than the whole “batch conversion” route.

@Carl - If it’s not in the settings then it’s probably a registry key issue, if you didn’t install irfanview (just copied the whole folder into the other machines) then just remove it and do a fresh install with the installer. I’m not that familiar with Irfanview’s registry keys so I can’t really give good advice on how to mess with them.
