Left4Dead Driver issues and how to fix them
People on the forums have been complaining about the latest NVIDIA driver update ( 180.48 ) causing stuttering in game (screen freezes for a few seconds then goes back again), A lot of threads have been made about these issues and here is a compilation of them:

Upon reading the threads there have been a few common solutions, I’ve listed them below:
Fix 1:
The first and seemingly most common solution is to disable the multicore rendering settings in the advanced video options, the disadvantage to this is that you get less FPS ratings because of the disabling.
An alternative way to disable this is to:
“Open taskmanager, right click on left4dead.exe, click afinity, and remove cpu 1″ contributed by GivinPain
Fix 2:
Another way to fix the problem is to simply rollback to the older drivers, preferrably 178.24 you can download it below:

Uninstall your current drivers clicking start->control panel -> add/remove programs and uninstalling your current NVIDIA drivers, then run the setup for the older drivers.
Fix 3:
if you can’t spare the FPS loss and don’t want to roll back on the new drivers you can try this out: Originally Posted by aggies11
This has been an issue way back with the start of the demo on specific machines/configurations. If you search you will find many solutions.A better solution then turning off multi-core (and taking a performance hit) for those of you *without* SLI is to change the setting from “Fullscreen” to “Windowed mode - borderless”. All the benefits of multicore, the game still looks the same (it’s still the whole screen if you run at your desktop resolution) but no more stuttering.
Make sure your desktop resolution is the same as your in game resolution.
Hopefully, the next few patches would resolve this issues, but for now these fixes have helped a lot of peoples facing the ’stuttering’ problem when they updated their drivers. If you still encounter these problems, you can still consult the forums for other alternatives.
